Travelling with a Mobility Scooter

Mobility

At Central Connect, we’re committed to helping everyone travel independently and with confidence. We understand that mobility scooters play an important role in helping people get around, and we’ll always do our best to accommodate them safely on our local bus services.

This policy sets out how we support passengers who wish to travel with a mobility scooter on our Central Connect network. It applies to all our local bus routes, but does not cover our flexible services operated with smaller Cityline vehicles, that unfortunately can’t carry mobility scooters.

Travelling with Your Scooter

Most of our local buses are low-floor single or double-deck vehicles, and these can usually carry smaller mobility scooters, known as Class 2 scooters, provided they meet the national safety standards set by the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT). Larger Class 3 scooters, or scooters without a class, cannot be carried for safety reasons.

If you’d like to travel with your scooter, you’ll need a Mobility Scooter Permit. This confirms that your scooter fits safely in the designated space on board and that you can get on and off the bus without difficulty. The assessment takes less than an hour and the permit is completely free. Once issued, it’s valid for two years and can be used with any bus operator that follows the same national Code of Practice.

To arrange your assessment or apply for a permit, please email [email protected]. Our friendly team will be happy to guide you through the process.

Our Commitment to Accessibility

Konectbus is proud to support the CPT Mobility Scooter Code of Practice. We believe everyone should be able to travel safely and confidently with us, and we’ll continue to review and improve our services to make that possible.

On the day of travel

Because not all of our local bus services are operated with vehicles which can accommodate mobility scooters, it is your responsibility to check before you travel that the journey(s) you wish to travel on will be operated by vehicles which can accommodate mobility scooters. You can check this by emailing [email protected].

When you board, simply show your permit to the driver and pay your fare or show your pass as usual. The driver will help ensure the bus is safely positioned for boarding. Please park your scooter in the wheelchair bay, reverse against the backrest and apply the brake. If that space is already being used by a wheelchair or another scooter, you may need to wait for the next service.

If Things Don’t Go to Plan

We do offer a Passenger Promise scheme which reimburses passengers for alternative travel costs, including taxi costs, where they are unable to travel on one of our bus services as planned. However, simply being unable to travel due to the type of bus allocated to the route is not necessarily sufficient for a valid Passenger Promise claim. More information can be found in our full Mobility Scooter Policy.
